Who is An Tairsigh for?
An Tairsigh is for families, groups of friends or couples who want a few days on the Atlantic edge: sea swimming, walking, painting, and yoga in the sunroom. It sleeps five across two king-size beds and a single. The cottage is not a secluded stay and backs onto a small road, and you'll see neighbours. Knightstown village, with its cafés and the Royal Hotel, is a ten-minute walk. The pull is the water, the island and the Iveragh peninsula around it: Bray Head, Geokaun mountain, the Valentia lighthouse and Glanleam beach are all within a ten-minute drive. It's a long way west (and that's the point): about 4 hours 45 from Dublin and 1 hour 23 from Tralee. The quickest way onto the island is the ferry from Reenard Point near Cahersiveen to Knightstown, a five-minute crossing that runs April to October. The bridge at Portmagee is open year-round. Things to note: Parking is in the lane way directly beside the cottage, a metre from the door, and reversing out onto the road is awkward, so have someone guide you. Shoes come off at the door: the floors are covered in hand-knotted Tibetan wool rugs. The shoreline is unguarded and uneven after dark, and the seabed is rocky, so pack beach shoes if you plan to swim. Phone signal is full and there's wifi, so this is not an off-grid stay. Minimalists, be warned: the cottage is full of art, books and pottery gathered by the family over the years.

The nearest train station is Killarney, with a Bus Éireann service on to Cahersiveen. From Cahersiveen, it's a short taxi to Reenard Point for the ferry or a longer taxi over the bridge via Portmagee.
