What is the minimum stay and price?

There is a two-night minimum stay at the Fieldhouse including weekends. One night is not enough to slow down! On pricing - The Fieldhouse sits in the €-€€ range — less than Ireland’s boutique resorts, but a step up from basic Airbnb stays.

Is the Fieldhouse good for couples? For families? for groups?

The Fieldhouse is really well suited to couples — especially those who are into cooking with the full outdoor kitchen area. The Fieldhouse sleeps 2 adults so sadly no families however, Julia is very happy to accommodate little ones as long as they are still in arms. Please note that the Fieldhouse does not provide any cots or highchairs.

Where is the closest shop?

The closest supermarket to The Fieldhouse is SuperValu in Wellington Bridge, a 10-minute drive, and Full and Plenty health food shop is in New Ross. We'd suggest stocking up before you arrive — though the Vine Cottage pub is a five-minute walk, and Susie's fish-and-chip van sets up nearby at weekend.

Is the Fieldhouse off-grid?

No — The Fieldhouse is a fully equipped little set of cabins in the woods, with mains electricity, central heating (no wood-burning stove), an oven, a washing machine and even a speaker. There is no wifi and phone signal is pretty good.

A set of two cabins in a small native woodland that host Julia planted herself twenty years ago, on the edge of Saltmills village in Wexford. Tucked into a little pocket of nature, the cabins feel as if you are totally in the wild, even though you're only a stones throw away from the local beach and village. The cabins themselves come with a full outdoor kitchen to enjoy under the stars, as well as an outdoor fire pit, private sauna with outdoor shower, and even a tiny fairy trail or two. Inside, your stay at the Fieldhouse is split between two cabins - a living space filled with art, books and other family treasures from Julia's nomadic life, a full kitchen with oven, hobs, living area and reading nook. In the other cabin you'll find your cosy queen sized bed and bathroom. It's a two-night minimum, totally private once the gate closes — and the village pub is five minutes' walk away

Who is The Fieldhouse for?

The Fieldhouse is for couples, friends and solo travellers who want to live woodland life for a few days — cook outside, light the fire pit, take a slow evening sauna, and just spend quality time together. The cabin sleeps two, and is walking and cycling paradise, with the Hook Peninsula's beaches, abbeys and Norman history all around when you do want to head out. Saltmills is about 2 hours from Dublin and around 2 hours from Cork. Perfect for those who want to feel totally immersed in nature, but still close to amenities and regular life. Things to note: The Fieldhouse sits on the edge of a village, not totally in wilderness — you'll sometimes hear neighbours and children playing and you can see some buildings through the trees. Parking is inside the property, ten metres from the door. There is no wifi at the cabins, but phone signal is pretty good.

What’s there to do?

You're at the head of the Hook Peninsula — one of the most history-dense corners of Ireland — with the sea ten minutes away. The best walk starts at the door: down to the Saltmills bridge, past the Vine Cottage, and over the Gothic bridge to Tintern Abbey. For food and drink, the Vine Cottage pub is a five-minute walk; Gralinn café in Fethard-on-Sea and Susie's weekend fish-and-chip van are ten minutes away; Lumi bakery and the pubs of Duncannon are ten minutes; and Aldridge Lodge in Duncannon does some of the best cooking in the county.

If you want a swim, Baginbun beach is a 10-minute drive from the Fieldhouse

Warm up in your private wood-fired sauna hidden in the trees, then cool off under the outdoor cold shower.

Spend the evening cooking your favourite meal in the outdoor kitchen, and then sit by the outdoor fire pit.

A note from your host

In a previous life I was an actress, a reflexologist, a gardener and a de-clutterer/designer: life has been rather episodic. In the past five years I have worked alongside my partner restoring and building eight dwellings in Mexico and Mid-West America. We divide our time between our jungle treehouse in Mexico, our Wisconsin lake cabin and The Fieldhouse. Here I have tried to create an ancestral home for my wandering self and for my adult daughters. I ran away to Mexico during lockdown! To unwind, I enjoy a few rounds of Tai Chi and then some red wine. Do I have that backwards?
